A JAPANESE FORAY IN SAVILE ROW
Eastern and Western cultures and their techniques come together in an unusual encounter through Japanese designer Satoshi Kuwata who was trained in Savile Row and Davies & Son, the oldest bespoke tailor on London's Savile Row, upholding a tradition of high quality and sophistication for generations.
In collaboration with Setchu, for the first time in its history, Davis & Son has undertaken a new adventure that will connect to the next generation while remaining faithful to the traditions of Saville Row, which relies heavily on hand-crafting. From the dialogue between the two companies, a new vision of the modern suit was born. This special project is an extension of dialogue between opposing ideas, such as clothes based on flat shapes that become three-dimensional when worn, and suits that redefine the body through cutting and darts.
The project was presented on April 17th at Palazzo Venier, Venice at the opening of Biennale Arte 2024. Although Venice is not known for contemporary fashion, we believe it was the ideal place to rediscover the diversity of languages and techniques, and the beauty of the complex harmony between the abstract and the practical.
In order to further understand the dialogue between Japan and the West; the worldview of Setchu, we exhibited products of various genres of traditional Japanese crafts and folk art, which are both our philosophy and roots, and present new value that has been redefined from Setchu's perspective.
